A diode is a two-terminal semiconductor device that primarily allows current to flow in one direction only and blocks current in the opposite direction. This property of diodes makes them crucial for a wide range of electronic applications such as rectification (converting AC to DC), signal modulation, and protection. The most common diodes are made from silicon, but other materials such as gallium arsenide (GaAs) and germanium (Ge) are also used for specific applications.
